Why is the Volkswagen important to Germany?

Please show sources. By Volkswagen, I mean the company, not a specific type of it.|||One of Germany's principal car manufacturers just as the biggest American car manufacturer is important to the US. Not sure how to show sources for something so obvious|||Many car companies are from Japan so it's like Ford and Chevrolet are important to America because they're amaerican made. So Volkswagen is important in Germany because it's their company.
