Are the 2006 and newer Volkswagen models reliable and good mechanically?

I'm looking to buy a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta GLI and have been doing some research on Volkswagen's. I have seen mixed reviews and just want to know if this particular vehicle would be a good purchase. Reliability and quality are very important to me.|||Yes these are good cars.|||http://volkswagencc.com/

Now reliability is actually alot better than most people will have you believe, there are plenty of people on forums.vwvortex.com who own GLI's and GTI's that haven't had any major issues at all. Consumer Report bases their ratings on previous models and since the current GLI/GTI were just released in 2006, the info isn't up to par with the new models. MKIV's (pre 2005.5) were terrible, I admit, but the new ones are holding up well with most people on VWVortex. But a VW definately isn't a car that will simply keep running if your definition of reliability means that you expect the car to run with out putting care into it.

I don't know what you mean by "good mechanically" but the engine used in the GLI is a very good powerplant. Its a 2.0T FSI engine that has good lower end torque, a nice power band and has great gas mileage. The engine is also used in the Passat, and in Audi's A3, A4, A5. Its holding up good, and doesn't have any of the problems that the older VW 1.8t's are known for (they had sludge problems due to a design flaw, and the timing belt issues, none of which the 2.0T has). The 6-speed stick is apparently very good (even better than the 5-speed I have in my Jetta) and the DSG is awesome as well, if you must drive auto.|||Expensive for repairs and their reliability rating is not very good according to "Consumer Reports" magazine . Which is a shame because I really like the looks of VW . For those reasons I have never bought one .
