Why volkswagen very expensive for its class?

I know volkswagen is not lexus, Acura or BMW. But I test drove one and it is very expensive for what it is.|||I agree they are overpriced. I have a BMW and love it.|||I have driven/owned several makes of cars. Toyota, Honda, Ford and a Mazda or two.

Like you, I thought VW was expensive. Then a few years ago, my brother bought a GTI. He let me drive it.

Love at 1st drive! It took me a year to make the jump but I finally got one of my own. I have never regretted it. In fact , I now drive a 2006 GTI. These cars are bullet-proof. Of course I shopped around and compared others. It may seem VW is high, but when you compare value, 1st in class interior, and attention to detail, VW comes out a bargain.

Honestly, when I compared the 'bottom line' price of the GTI against the Honda and Mazda I was considering, they all were within just $100s different.

The GTI has proven to be a fantastic curve-hugging, rev-happy , durable car.

Oh, and dont believe the Myth that VW parts prices are higher than others. I had a headlite bulb go out. Called the VW dealer for price; $8. I was at Wal-mart and checked their price;$8. Just out of curiosity, I looked at the prices of bulbs for Toyota and Honda; all were $8 . This is just 1 example of many , so Ive done my homework and the Myth is Busted!

BTW , my 06 GTI only cost me $24k tax included. The least expensive BMW I looked at was $33k. I would have loved to get the BMW, but it was just not in my budget.|||I don't have the #s to give you, but you should see the union benefits they get in Germany. Spa's, massages etc. I work harder, get paid less and have to pay for my own benefits. If unions employees got paid like the rest of us the price would come down and people would buy more cars. No! During hard time all around the world they want to strike for more??? Go figure. And yes I own a 1996 BMW R1100GS bike. Damn good quality from them.|||While VWs can seem expensive they really are nice quality cars. They are extremely reliable and unlike a Lexus, Acura, Or Bmw they are extremely cheap to maintain.|||VW fancies themselves a "premium" brand. That's about it.

Do you have a page on where i can find a used short block or piston for 1993 volkswagen eurovan 2.5 liter?

Everyone tells me the only way I can find a good complete used short block. Actully my block is OK the only problem I have are the pistons. Can someboby tell me if the audi 5 cylinder of the diesel uses the same size of my pistons or any type of car? How many miles would a 2005 volkswagen jetta gls last me?

Im thinking about buying a 2005 volkswagen jetta gls and i just wanna know how many miles can i expect it to last before i start having some serious problems|||i just put a motor in my 96 ...only because i needed to put in a transmission, it ran great with 170,000 i only changed it because i got a great deal with the trans. 50,000 miles for $900.|||i own a 05 jetta tdi, at least until the lease is up in nov, when i will be getting the new 09 tdi . I have 156 k on it, and the total cost as been about 750.00 to repairs, not bad for a car with that much mileage, the brake pads haven't even needed to be changed. As to your question, xpect at least 250 k out of the car, just do oil changes and any regular maintenance, about 150k, check that your belt is ok, and replace if needed, if it goes when your driving, you will have a a serious valve prob, get the car you will be happy..|||A diesel will likely last longer than a gas one.

I drive a 1999 VW Jetta GLS TDI (i.e. diesel), and it has 177,000 miles on it. I've heard of others getting 300k out of them. I've had a lot of small problems with it (replacing sensors that say whether doors/trunk are open, etc.) but nothing major.|||I'd guess about 100,000 miles if it has under 50k miles on it

What is the difference between skoda and volkswagen?

people say that skoda is a branch of volkswagen started in Czechoslovakia. is it true?

volkswagen is equal to skoda?|||Set up in the late 1800s, Skoda (a Czech Republic based car manufacturer) was one of the oldest car companies in the world. The company and its cars had enjoyed considerable repute in the first half of the 1900s. However, its fortunes turned after the Second World War, when it first came under Nazi control and was later nationalized by the Czechoslovakian government. By the 1980s, Skoda cars had lost track of the technological advancements in the West, and were widely derided for their poor quality and unreliability. In 1991, Volkswagen acquired a stake in Skoda. Following this, Volkswagen went about systematically transforming Skoda's image and establishing it as a reliable mass market car brand.

Even in India, Volkswagen is using Skoda's plant to roll out it's cars...|||Better quality and lower price. So, built by VW but not equal. From 2007:

German automaker Volkswagen (VOWG) is wielding a secret bullet to challenge rivals Toyota (TM) and General Motors (GM) in global markets鈥攁nd it isn't a new small car. It's VW's Czech-built Skoda cars. Lower-priced and higher-quality than similar models built by Volkswagen, Skoda's automobiles are driving a global growth jag, with sales up 13.2% in the first half of 2006. "Skoda has become the true Volkswagen (people's car)," says Commerzbank (CBKG) auto analyst Albrecht Denninghoff.|||See. Skoda is a division of a Volkswagon but I think personally Volkswagon is a better car company as it has cars and models ranging for all prices and usage whereas skoda has only few cars to suit you. My uncle recently bought a skoda Superb and a Volkswagon Jetta. As we know, both are almost of the same price range and usage. But he liked his Jetta better than his Skoda as bcoz of its low maintainence and better quality.

I hope I helped you out.|||not more than names

Oil/fltr. change, Dust and pollen filter change, Check fluids in trans., Rotate wheels, Check brake pads thickness, Check battery charge, Check spare tire, etc.

Difference between a volkswagen golf and a gti?

i might buy a volkswagen, but there is a golf and a gti? what is the difference between the golf and the gti?|||It really depends on the generation you are looking at. The answer varies from them being very similar, to there being major differences. With the late model mk6 and mk5 generations, the premium 2.0T FSI motor was only available in the GTI, and the Golf/Rabbit came with a 2.5L I-5 or 2.0L TDI diesel motor. Going back to the MK4 generation, you could get the 1.8T motor in the Golf or GTI, although only the 150HP version from the 2001 GTI. The VR6 motor was GTI only, the same as the MK3 generation. MK2 generation the optional 16 valve motor was only available in the GTI, and the transmission had shorter gears for both the 8V and 16V models. MK1 Rabbit GTIs featured a higher output 8V motor than the standard Rabbit.

For all 6 generations, the GTI has come with the sport suspension standard, premium alloy wheels, premium seating surfaces and interior appointments, and other standard features appearing as options on the Golf or Rabbit.

I hope that this answer helps you to understand the differences, obviously these are just the basics.|||Saying Golf or GTI is like saying Malibu or Chevelle SS. Simple as that.

Is the 1999 volkswagen passat a good first car?

Hi, I found a 99 Volkswagen passat for 4000$ with 68000 miles. It has a free carfax report and seems like it was well taken car of and no wrecks. I need some opinions? Thanks.|||Its good car, very good mileage on, it expensive bit that price and that mileage its looks OK.|||Keep in mind the Passat is a near-luxury car. By that I mean it has many options not found on other family cars .

Options mean extra parts that can and do wear out. They can be expensive to diagnose and repair.

That said , the Passat is a safe, road worthy car.

If the expense is worrisome for you, try a Golf or Rabbit or Jetta. They are much less to own and operate.|||they are good cars, eventually your going to need parts. i would due a minor tuneup. They are very expense. Nice car.|||Too expensive.

What is the difference between the different 2010 volkswagen golfs?

i hav a 2006 Volkswagen beetle, if i used the regular gas to fill it up, approximately how much would it be to fill up the whole thing?|||a group of college students filled one with 20 young ladies. not sure if they were using regular or super unleaded.|||The New Beetle has a 13+ gallon tank.

Right now gas here is $3.70 per gallon.

That's $48.10 to fill the tank.

Our Beetle got abt. 32 miles to the gallon.

Does anyone now what happened to the Volkswagen Golf?

I can't seem to find the VW Golf, on the Volkswagen website.|||Volkswagen decided to change the name for the 2007 model Golf and rename it the Rabbit. This goes back to the original model name. In the late 70's and early 80's the original Golf was sold all over the world as the Golf but was sold, and some were built, in America as the Rabbit. So call it a Golf or a Rabbit, it's the same car.

Oh, all VW model names, Jetta, Golf, Corrado, etc are German words for types of wind if I remember correctly.|||If you are looking at www.vw.com, the golf is the GTI and the rabbit.|||LOOK FOR IT IN THE SHOW ROOM, NOT ON THE WEB SITE............NO WONDER YOU CANNOT FIND IT...

THE 2007 GOLF WAS RECENTLY UNVEILED|||I found these links on Google:

http://www.vw.com/rabbit/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Golf

http://autos.yahoo.com/newcars/volkswagen_golf_2006/4611/model_overview.html

I think the new name for it is 'Rabbit', since that first link says on it 'Official homepage of the vw golf'|||it's still there...just the majority of the US doesn't call it a Golf anymore, rather than a Rabbit (since many years) or now the fancier version, the GTI|||The Volkswagen Golf was originlly called the Rabbit. The argument in marketing in the U.S. was that you can love a rabbit, but what's a "golf"? So they switched the name back to Rabbit hoping that people will remember the fond memories they had of the original rabbit when it was designed by Guigiaro of ItalDesign. The GTI and R32 are the ultimate incarnations of the rabbit/golf. The R32 should be on the market again next year. It's a phenomenal car.|||Hopefully the R32 will return to the US. There are rumblings that it will be the R36. R32 is a great car but too expensive - it's competitors, the Evo, WRX and WRX STI are less expensive, lighter and better performers. Well, the EVO MR with all the bells and whistles is quite expensive.

Can't wait until the new STI limited it available. Then I'll have to decide to either wait for the R3X or buy the new STI (only 800 are being produced).

Another nice car to consider is the new VW Eos.|||The Golf was replaced by the VW rabbit. VWOA just thought that the Rabbit name would appeal more to people.

Convert a Volkswagen Jetta from automatic to manual?

Yea so my parents are handing me down there old Jetta and its in great condition considering its about 8 years old. Only problem is that it's automatic and I really don't like driving automatic. How much do you think Volkswagen would charge me to have it changed to manual? Is it even possible?|||anything is possible, but that is highly improbable. The parts alone would run you over $1000 on top of the labor. And thats if the car comes from the factory with all the required tapped holes in the firewall for the pedals, master cylinder, along with the shift linkages. My advice would be to leave it alone. I was going to do this to my Eclipse I had, but once you realize how much time and money is involved, it just isnt worth it. If you want a manual real bad, just trade in the auto for one. No sense in butchering up a perfectly good car, Hope this helps, good luck to ya!|||It's way easier and cheaper to just sell it and buy a manual. I'm not saying it can't be done, but by the time your done with the conversion, you probably could have bought a new jetta|||yet it is possible. why do you want to convert this to standard most people would do the opposite. this will cost more than the car is worth. plus your wiring in the dash is not made for a standard you have to change sensors the main computer in the car under the dash. wiring hornesses. leave it alone.

Do Volkswagen Beetles have a high frequency rate of flipping over?

Does anyone know if it is true that Volkswagen Beetles flip over a lot?|||I assume you mean the OLD beetles not the new ones.

Nope.. they dont flip over because all the weight is low on the body. You can flip an SUV a lot easier.

The ARE a bit light in the front end if you drive in windy or snowy areas. That is easily solved with about a 10 pound sack of sand in the front end (which was also handy for getting out of icy areas).

All in all they are pretty safe as long as you keep them under 90 (thats a joke in case you have never driven one - grin).

.|||In my experience of driving Beetles they didn't flip but a little side wind was enough to send them wandering all over the road.

And yes the VW Bus was much worse - I had a girlfriend who rolled one on an icy road in Hampshire, England.

I also drove a Karmann Ghia - lower, flatter, very slightly more streamlined - it wandered far less.|||no they dont, they have a very low center of gravity they do not flip over easily at all, old vw vans (or the vw bus as they are properly called) did tend to have a roll over problem, they didn't so much roll over as just fall over on there side, they were fairly tall with a high center of gravity and narrow wheel base, it was not a significant danger though just something to watch out for, the only truly dangerous thing i know of concerning volkswagens has to do with old vw cars (bugs, squarebacks, things etc..) since the engines were in the rear they had little strength in the front of the car so in an accident it was fairly common for the hood of the car to smash straight back and cut off the top of the car, this would usually cut the occupants in half as well, this is what gave them the bad rep as being "death traps"|||Yes When you travel in high speed in reverse(like 30) then turn the steering wheel hard over one way suddenly while pulling up on the emergency brake really hard at the same time) . Provided that the gas tank is not too full at the time and that the parking brakes are set up properly you could do it.

Other than that, only if you cut across a very steep hill on a Thursday in June during the full moonlight.|||I was in the car with my boyfriend when he flipped my 2001 New Beetle last month. He tapped the break on a downhill at not more than 30 mph, slid, lost control so that we did a 180 into oncoming traffic, then slid backwards in the mud until we tipped, rolled once, and then slid into a ravine until we were caught by a tree. We were fine, walked out without a scratch, but the new beetle rolled- it has the engine in the front.

I don't know how often it happens, but ours flipped pretty well and righted itself.|||The 67 and earlier beetle rolled easy if tossed around When VW began putting IRS in the rear stability was improved dramatically. The 68 model year had IRS in the auto stick models 69 on I believe they were all IRS. The shape of the car made them a safe car to roll in. If rolling could be considered safe. If you rolled one everybody just rolled it back on it's wheels and generally you could drive away.

getting cut in half is BS.|||I don't think so. Usually, only SUVs and trucks have a high probability of rollover, due to the higher center of gravity.

Newer "New Beetle" models come with "ESP" which lessens the probability of something like this happening even more.|||no, you would have a better chance eating sushi with yer buttcheaks than getting a bug to roll.|||never in my life have i heard of a beetle flipping over.|||no its not easy like twist said.|||no, they are VERY safe cars.

Did Volkswagen put itself at the service of the Nazi war machine?

The volkswagen company built v-1 flying bombs and launched them towards london. Is it the preferred car of a mass murderer?|||Volkswagen was pretty much invented by the Nazi's. Ferdinand Porsche also designed tanks. A lot of things we know now about Hitler and the Nazi's weren't known by most Germans at the time.

The company we know now was largely put together by the British Army of Occupation to try and give West Germany some income.|||If you owned a company in that time period, with that amount of propaganda, with the government controlling every aspect of every moment of your days, weeks and months - you're telling me you wouldn't do what your government requested of you?

VW = Engineers

Engineers are always hard to find when they're needed...|||We don't really know, at that time Volkswagen was one of the most popular and advanced cars. The car was effective and useful so the Nazi used it, also the company had relations with the Germans. And yes, they did put itself in the service of the Nazi's they settled a deal.|||Al Capone loved ford he even wrote Henry Ford . Ford was so proud that a bank robber of his stature used a ford as his get away car and had the letter framed and displayed in his office|||No more so than Mistubishi did with Japan...guess who made the "Zero".|||They say Hitler came up with the Bettles design when he saw a lady bug flying....Hitler was also responsible for the modern highway system when he created the Autobahn....

What is the difference between a Volkswagen Passat 2.0T and a Passat Komfort?

I had a 2007 Volkswagen Passat 2.0T (loaded) but someone hit me from behind going 50 mph while i was stopped at a red light back in February. It was just totaled and i got the check last Tuesday. i am now looking at a 2008 Passat Komfort and i would like to know what the difference is. From what ive seen most of it is the same.|||They are for the most part the same;(in base editions anyway) the Komfort (2008) replaced the 2.0T as the base Passat (2007), with a few more standard features in the Komfort--automatic transmission became standard and has 17" rims, vs 16" in the 2.0T while 2007 had a manual transmission available as well. The 2008 had manual transmission available only in upper line trim levels (turbo), while in 2007, the manual transmission was standard in lower lines, with the automatic as an option. One large difference is that the 2007 2.0T had many options available for it; leather, CD changer, HD headlights, etc., In 2008 Komfort has very limited options, front and rear side air bags and the like. Other options such as NAV system, etc. and leather or HD headlights aren't available as factory options in the Komfort model; 2007 models had these available either as standard or as stand alone options or in option packages. To get these options on a 2008 Passat, you have to move up at least one or more trim levels upwards (from the Komfort model) and spend more money to get stuff that you may or may not want.

How do you switch on the volkswagen golf trip computer?

I am going to buy a Volkswagen Jetta, is there any year that I should avoid buying?

I plan to buy a Volkswagen Jetta this summer, Diesel and standard. I have heard they are very reliable and great on fuel. I am going to buy it used and I would like to buy one no older than a '01. I would like to know if there is a year that has had a lot of issues that I should avoid. Also any other tips you would like to give for buying a used Jetta would be appreciated.|||The 99.5 to 03 diesel is the best for economy. They will get mid 50's to upper 60's pretty easily with a manual tranny. They are known for reliability and are pretty simple to work on. The only issues are making sure the timing belt is replaced on schedule and the intake manifold needs cleaned periodically because of soot build up. Do not baby these cars, drive them somewhat aggressively and you will not get the soot build up.|||While Ford is the king of recalls, VW is the king of electrical gremlins. Avoid.|||Avoid all of them. Not reliable at all especially used. Save yourself the trouble and money and do not buy one.|||Stay away from 02-03, they had several issues not that they were hard or expensive to fix just annoying. Id go for a 05 TDi.|||They require a lot of up keep and maintenance and tooling.

What do you think of the Volkswagen Jetta?

I am considering a 2008 Jetta for my next car. I want to get it before the Sign and Drive offer is over. I have never had a Volkswagen. Please share your experiences. Thanks!|||I am going to pick up several negative feedback on this one but I don't like it. I worked on both VW and Audi. Having worked on several other cars, I find them poorly designed. The only positive thing I can say is the cars use German parts. Very little problem with bolts breaking off during repair.

Many unreliable electronic parts are used and they just cause problem on high mileage cars. The in dash display looses pixels, and the ABS modulator goes out frequently. Ignition coils goes out randomly and the engine computer isn't smart enough to detect which one.

The timing belt service is twice as expensive than other cars because you have to take one side of the front bumper and swing it out of the way. This adds additional 2 - 3 hours of labor compare to other cars.

1. Factory there are little fingers that should stick out of the back of the emblem, this corresponds to the holes in the deck, the holes in the deck should have a little plastic insert, so that when you push the emblem in to it, they grasp and hold it in place. You can get those little plastic inserts from eBay or the dealer.

2. If the fingers of the emblem are broken off you can use 3m weather strip double sided tape (red color)

that you can buy at most automotive stores in the molding/body work section. Clean the back of the emblem to be free of dirt. Clean the body of the car.

Cut a strip of tape to fit the back of the emblem, apply and press.. then remove the red plastic position it, and stick it to the car.

3. You can use clear silicone RTV to glue it to the deck, clean the back of the emblem, and the area to be attached to. Lay a bead of RTV to the back of the emblem, and spread it evenly on all about the back, Apply to the car and press it so that the silicone will ooze out. Wipe the excess, and affix the emblem with tape for 24 hours while the RTV dries, Over night works just as well.

RTV will hold that sucker good, so that when the person on the cell phone smacks in to your car, your badge will bend but not break.

Rear badges that I "siliconed" to the car, held up rather well on impact.

What do you feel about the Volkswagen as an a Car and a Company?

what are the words, things, stuff any thing can come up to your mind or feel it when you hear about Volkswagen? early answers much appreciated!|||Most vehicles that I have owned and driven have been VWs. I found that despite being kind of small for my tastes, they were efficient, reliable and affordable, except recently when I find that their increase in price no longer matched any increase in quality.

They are still efficient and reliable.

Looks? - I love the way VWs look - but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.|||German therefore reliable, i love the neat styling on interiors and exteriors, they've great value for money and if you don't like the look of the VW you could get an audi or skoda instead,|||I have had various VW over the years,,,,,,,,,all good and getting better as the years go by,,,,,,,,, the Passat diesel is my car of choice as of today,,,,,,,,,,,, good luck|||I love my dad 69 Vw Bug and wish to have a New Beetle RSI.

How reliable is the 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit?

I just purchased a brand new 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit. I am very excited but of course have my concerns. Are there any common issues that I should keep my eye out for? What is the most important thing I can do to keep my car running flawlessly? How is the integrity of this car? |||Congratulations on your purchase. The Rabbit is a fine car that shouldn't give you too many headaches, a world of difference from Volkswagens in the past. Better build quality standards and being manufactured in Germany benefit this car greatly. A lot of past yahoo answers claimed it was a new car 'so watch out', but it was actually released in Europe in November 2003 and has proven very reliable, without the 'ghost in the machine' electrical problems of the MKIV Golf. I sold about 120 Rabbits during my tenure with Volkswagen and not one of them was a lemon. The feedback from my customers was excellent and it quickly became my favourite car to sell. I am no longer employed by Volkswagen, I am in the IT sector, but I still recommend Rabbits to everyone I talk to who aspires to have a fun, reliable, sporty, functional car with German build quality and ingenuity. |||those would have been great questions to aske BEFORE you bought the car.

they are somewhat below average, but not incredibly so as the 99-05 jetta and golf were.

keep an eye on all things electronic. VW has had some terrible times with that. also watch the dealer. i don't know if they still do it, but they used to have a large plastic rock guard under the car. it was held on by more than 20 screws. the dealer left out 14 of them after a repair one day, i had a problem and they would not honor the warranty b/c the guard was not fastened correctly. how do i know it was the dealer? tehy were the only ones that ever worked on that car.|||I got an '08 Rabbit (2 door, manual gearbox) in December of last year and have driven it for almost 10,000 trouble-free miles. :)

I know that's not exactly a lot of miles lol, but I don't have any complaints about the car at all. It's comfortable, quick, and I was surprised how well it gets around in the horrible Iowa snow. The only thing that ticks me off about it is my Volkswagen Dealership's service. When I got the car they told me my first oil change would be completely free, and then they charged me $84. Free my ***...and they were just rude about the whole thing. The car itself is fantastic though.

What is wrong with my Volkswagen Golf GTI tail lights?

Hello. I just bought a set of aftermarket tail lights for my 2000 Volkswagen golf. The lights fit great, but the only thing that wont work is the brake lights. They will either not light up at all with the headlights on, or will illuminate all of the brake lights even without the brake on. I am not sure what I should do. Should I try and move the running light wire to another housing because one of the housings won't do anything. Thanks.|||try putting the stock ones back in to figure out if its the new lights or just the wiring

Volkswagen loan payments and their effect on interest?

Does anybody know if I pay more than the required monthly amount on my car loan with Volkswagen, will that raise the interest that I have to pay? Is there some kind of clause against paying extra, since the company will be missing out on some interest unless they raise it?

Thanks to anybody who knows anything about this stuff. Please don't answer if you're just guessing and don't actually know what you're talking about.|||I don't know what your loan contract states, but I have never heard of a higher interest rate for paying extra on a loan. In fact, what I have found to be standard on my car loans is that they will calculate the payments according to how I pay it, so if I or you pay sooner we can save a little interest and if we pay more, we can save a lot more interest.

Volkswagen, or whoever else is financing your car, might give up a little interest, but it is the ethical thing to do if you have paid more than they previously calculated you would pay each month and they are trading a little lost interest for a reduction in risk of having to repossess your car.

Can I jumpstart a Volkswagen Beetle with jumper cables?

Can I use jumper cables to start a 1970 12 volt Volkswagen Beetle? Will this destroy the starter, or should I use a battery charger?|||Lift the sitting cushion off the back seat attach cables and jump start, had 6 BEATLES..

Will NOT destroy anything.|||Does not do damage to the starter. More so, if you are not careful and do a cross connect and you have an alternator, it will fry that. Yours or the other car. Battery charger is not for jump starting a battery, it is for charging a battery, and if you are always charging your battery, you may have fried your alternator already at some point in time. Any shop needs to check its output.|||Yes. Just not you 6 volt people...

You don't need a shop to test the output, if you have more than 12 volts when you test the battery terminals with a voltmeter with the car running you're ok. if not, probably killed it, or the voltage regulator is going / gone bad.|||you'll be fine, i've done it a few times on my car (71 super) with no adverse results.

Mazda protege or volkswagen jetta as a first car?

I am going to buy my first car and i am undecieded on which car to choose. A 2001 mazda protege lx 2.0 or a 2002 volkswagen jetta gls 2.0. I like both cars but am not sure. What do you think?|||I would go with the Jetta because you will get way more bang for your buck! And I don't mean BANG as in your car will break down lol!

The Jetta has more of a solid feel and better quality overall. I believe (don't quote me on this one) that some parts are from Ford in the Mazda vehicle. Not 100% but I do know for a fact that Mazda and Ford have done some swapping even thought Mazda was the only one taking the Parts and Ford did not ANYWAY, another reason why I would recommend the Jetta overt he protege is the fuel consumption and oil. I know the 2.0L in the Jetta is VERY fuel efficient, I know because I had a 2001 Golf GLS for 5 years and I gave it to my younger brother (20) for school because it's so good on gas. Oil is another advantage, it doesn't use syntic oil compared to others with turbos or V6's due to the simple design in the engine (simple is good).

One thing that goes against the Jetta is certain maintenance costs. Though the basics are well...priced basic. There are certain check-ups that you will encounter which may be a lil pricy (like say if you reach the 110,000km (I use metric) mark then you'll have a more adnavced check-up. But that's of course rare. But it does depend how often you drive your vehicle.

Overall, it's a good vehicle.|||As a massive VW enthusiast, I would recommend that you purchase a Protege. The Volkswagens are amazing in Europe, but the "Made in Mexico" ones you find in North America won't even come close. I have owned many mazdas, currently 240,000km on my protege, havent even replaced a headlight! NOTHING!!

|||Jetta. It looks way better and it does great on gas. The Jettas are very reliable and the old Mazdas have very poor reliablilty ratings. Also the Jettas have a way better ride to them. Where did the Volkswagen game come from?

I've always hated that little game where every time you see a Volkswagen (Mainly a Bug), you punch a person near you. What I want to know is who ever came up with that game. Where did it originate?|||Punch Buggy

Punch Buggy (also called slug bug or Punch Bug[1]) is a car game generally played by children in which participants punch each other in the arm upon first sight of a Volkswagen Beetle while calling out "Slug bug!" or "Punch buggy!" in reference to the Beetle's nickname, the Bug.

History

Most references about the game originate from unofficial sources and personal accounts from players. Estimates suggest that it has existed since the 1960s.[3]

As part of the Punch Dub marketing campaign run by Volkswagen, a man named Charlie "Sluggy" Patterson was presented as "the guy who made a game out of seeing VWs and punching his friends."[4] This campaign, launched in 2009, claims that the game was started "over 50 years ago." Though provided by the company itself, this history of the game presented in this ad is purely humorous historical fiction created[5] by the ad agency Deutsch Inc..|||Believe it or not the Volkswagen is German for the peoples' wagon.

When are the miles just too much?|||If, big IF, its been cared for properly, $5k may be a steal for an 02 TDI with that kind of mileage. The only real issue with the '02s is that the automatic transmissions are absolute garbage.

At 180,000 miles, the car should be on its 3rd timing belt. If the full timing belt/water pump job hasn't been done recently, you might as well factor in about $800 to the purchase price to have it done by a TDI expert.

Go over to http://www.tdiclub.com and http://www.myturbodiesel.com and read read read read about these cars. yeh thats a lot.... but not if your getting a good deal... :)|||It's not the miles that the problem with these cars, age is more of a problem. Check to see if the turbo and the Power Steering Rack has replaced on the car and the Back Axle Bushings.|||Its tough sometimes to find a low mileage car when you need one. volkswagon are known for headgasket problems and automatic transmission problems, Often times after 80,000 miles a head gasket can go, and later on past 120,000 miles a transmission and electrical problems are common, the best thing to do is be patient and pass on higher mileage cars, a website that has some good information on used cars is carcomplaints.com click on the manufacturers name in blue letters to the left of the home page, and scroll down to your make and model and see what consumers have to say, buying high mileage used cars can be a problem, at the very least besides a 40 minute to one hour test drive take the car to a good mechanic and get an engine and transmission diagnostic, this can help save you from expensive future problems. How do I negotiate the best price for a used car: Volkswagen Rabbit OR Toyota Camry?

I'm considering a used Toyota Camry or a new Volkswagen Rabbit. If I go with a used vehicle, there are so many Camrys out there, I don't want to pay $14.00 for every Camry I look up on Consumer reports (which I hear can be done). With the Volkswagen rabbit, since they are new, how do I find out about dealer hold backs, rebates, incentives... and other ways to negotiate the best price?|||The best way to negotiate a price is to know the value of the vehicles before hand. Check out the vehicle by going to www.kbb.com and enter the make, model, year of the vehicle in question and click on the radial button for "Excellent", "Good", "Fair" or "Poor" condition. The next page will give you a $ amount you should be paying for that vehicle. Of course this is a round-about-figure but this is a starting place for negotiation. Offer that price or some price a little lower (don't get rediculouse) for the vehicle you are looking at. As far as a new vehicle (Volkswagon Rabbit), most manufacturers show on their website any rebates or incentives that are currently offered. Again, look at the kbb.com website for the "New" vehicle catagory and find out what other people are paying for the same vehicle and negotiate around that price.

God bless!!|||One thing you can do is use the auto sites like Edmund's or Auto Trader to find out the prices of a Camry in your zip code. If you or someone you know is a AAA member, they have a car-buying service that will usually do better than most of us can do on our own. I don't think you will get info on the dealer holdback, because that is their money, and they won't give it to you. Be aware of this, selling anything is a business. They will make a profit on what you buy. If they don't make profit, they go out of business. What you want to do is make sure that you don't give them too much profit.|||go on kellybluebook.com and look up the value that way.... My 1999 Volkswagen Beetle keeps getting hot and it has antifreeze in it. What could make it get hot?

My 1999 Volkswagen Beetle keeps getting hot and when I check it in the morning, it has antifreeze in it. What could be making it get hot?|||You could have several causes of running hot: you need to check if thermostat is working (not stuck closed); are the radiator fans operational (when the vehicle engine temp is hot, you ought be able to hear the radiator fans operate); poor circulation thru the radiator; or a fairly common issue is the water pump impeller not circulating the water. (As I remember, I think it was 2000 or 2001 when VW changed the impeller design )

My suggestion is that you take the vehicle to a VW specialist to have the cooling system operation put under a diagnosis to determine the cause of the overheating. Avoid driving the vehicle as much as possible, driving the vehicle hot can lead to expensive repairs such as a blown head gasket.

Hope this helps, a car nut.|||You need to know that not only is the coolant level correct but also is it's quality good and it's mixture proper via using a anti-freeze tester. Also be sure that your thermostat is is working right and that there's no leaks, plus be sure the water pump is working right and that the fan or fans are engaging once the engine sits idling awhile.

If you notice that once the vehicle sits at a light or stop sign etc it starts to over heat it's probably fan related so check the fan fuse and relay , plus the fans wiring and the fan itself.

If it never over heats while driving hwy speeds you can be pretty sure that the water pump and thermostat is working.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way it not be a bad idea to go to a library and get some literature or buy yourself a service manual so you can have step by step trouble shooting check lists etc to follow etc.|||is it running hot or is the gauge just showing it is hot. make sure the coolant bottle it topped of, the coolant temp sensor is not bad and the system does not have too much air in it.

Anyone have any idea how many miles volkswagen golfs tend to run up to before they start breaking apart?|||My golf is a 95 and it has 208,000miles I started haveing problems like needing a new clutch and mass air flow sensor at about 200,000 miles it cost around $1400 to replace all that, including an inspection, all that good stuff.|||volkswagen is a good car, probably (if it's not a lemon) at least 200K|||That Golf is 10 years old!! 75K miles is nothing for a car that old. That is only 7500 miles per year and for the average car 15,000 miles per years is normal.

There is no way you'll find a 10 year old car with less than 60k miles on it unless grandma only drove it once a week. If you want a car with less than 60K miles on it you should be looking at 3 or 4 year old cars, not ten year old cars.

I want a Volkswagen bus, but I'd opinions. If I bought a bus for $5,000 - $9,000 that is completely restored and runs great with low mileage, would that be more expensive or less expensive than restoring one myself that needs, let's say, new windows, lights, paint, tires, and interior?

I'm open to any ideas, opinions, or websites.

Thanks in advance, too :-)|||If you can buy a VW bus (restored) for $5k, grab it and run. A fully restored Samba (will all the 20+ windows) will run about $20k.

The cost of restoration is, of course, dependant upon how badly the core vehicle has deteriorated. Parts for a VW bus are available, but not nearly as plentiful as those of a Bug.

I would suggest several approaches...

1) Start looking for buses and checking out their condition.

2) Check eBay's completed logs for bus sales. and start getting an idea of what their value is (what people ACTUALLY paid for them and what they were like - dont forget to factor in the shipping or pickup costs that the people paid to actually GET the vehicle.

3) Check out costs for windows, seats, engines, etc.. just to get a feel on how much the parts may run. Generally whatever you need it is available.. But some things are incredibly overpriced. (Try the 2" plastic finger guard for a vw bug interior door latch.

4) Find out if there are any nearby auto dismantlers (wrecking yards) that handle VW's.. Remember that some parts (generally the mechanical ones) are interchangeable between the bus and the bug.

5) Live near Mexico? Your part sources just improved incredibly. Lots of parts and vehicles available in Mexico..

6) Talk to other people who already have or are restoring a bus. Great information source.. and great stories too. Focus as much on learning what NOT to do as what to do.

ok.. start looking and good luck.

,|||I'll put it to you this way- I restored a 1964 Bus that was a field car, all rusty, didn't run well, stripped down, etc. I had it restored in three weeks with about $6K. I bought it for $1500. It's worth in the $15K range. Me and a couple of my friends did everything- rebuilt the engine and drivetrain, replaced all rusty body parts, gave it a beautiful paint job, installed an entire new interior, you name it. $6K it cost us. 100% stock.|||It depends on your skills. If you have the tools and ability to do a lot of the work yourself it would cost thousands. If you need to pay someone to do it, it will cost thousands more.

Installing a audio system in a volkswagen rabbit?

I am looking into buying a 1986 Volkswagen Rabbit convertible, and I wanted to install a new stereo (at least the dash) as the ones that come with it don't generally play CDs or MP3. However, this is an old car (almost 25 years) and the stereos are new. Is there a particular reason that I wouldn't be able to do this? what are the limitations? what should I look out for here?|||you can do this...however I'd make sure your wiring is good...and also make sure that your battery and alternator on the car are fairly new as you don't want to put too much load on them. i'd watch out for the speakers as they are old...you'll probably want new ones otherwise they could mess up from the load of the new stereo....just go to a place like Hawk Electronics...they have done my cars for years.

Is it easy to repair average mechanical problems in a 2002 Volkswagen New Beetle?

I'm shopping for my first car, and my dad wants me to get a car that he would be able to repair himself when minor mechanical issues occur. My dad is good with cars and he's basically saying that if I have to take my car to a shop every single time there are minor problems, he doesn't want me to get it. So my question is, are 2002 Volkswagen New Beetles capable of being self-repaired? Ten points to the best answer!|||Well that really depends on how capable your dad is and what the problem is with the vehicle. If its changing the oil or replacing a serpentine belt, its not much different than any other front wheel drive car. They are mostly set up the same except for maybe a few things being in different locations. If that is the car you really want i would say invest in a maintenance and repair manual. They are full of instructions and tips on diagnosing problems and making removal and installation MUCH easier! I hope this helps!

Where does the in line fuel filter go on a Volkswagen Beetle?

I replaced the in-line fuel filter on my Volkswagen Beetle (1970,) but I think I have it going in the wrong direction. It is spliced into a tube going between a little thing next to the flywheel with a saucer shaped thing on top to the part directly below the air filter (on top.) Is there another fuel filter? Where should the little arrow on the in line one be pointing? Is it possible to clean the other fuel filter?|||Arrow twards the carb, youll be fine, use new clamps|||Yeah, ok, I figured out what you are talking about. VW never came out with a fuel filter. Not a stock item. In that "saucer shaped thing"%26gt;called a fuel pump%26lt; if you are lucky it is held together by 6 or 8 screws around it(easily visible) That is a serviceable one. You undo all the screws, and lift off the top and inside you will see a little brass screen (now I do not remember if you have to remove the black rubber diaphram first or not- too long ago)which you make sure is clean of being blocked (by just lifting it up in your fingers and blowing hard on it with your mouth)and then put it all back together. Done. IF you are unlucky, the saucer thing will be crimped together (unservicable)- I never had one so never had to work on one. Is there a screen inside? Not one you can get to.

Is the in line filter really necessary? Only if you were getting your gas out of a drum, and pouring it out of a dirty bucket. Otherwise the screen does just fine. NEVER had a problem. These cars are made to be serviceable in extreme conditions by the driver with limited tools(a screwdriver, a pair of pliers, spark plug socket, and a 10/13mm wrench does it all.|||i put a filter on mine to catch the old rust and gunk that is in the tank (71 super) but it really isn't necessary....

I can't find the Cooling system bleeder valve in my 1995 Volkswagen Golf, I need to know where is it, beacuse I need to bleed the cooling system.|||Not really necessary.

The filler tank is the highest point, and any air will bleed out once the engine heats and cools once or twice. Just refill for a day or 2 as needed.

If you really wanted to, there are some brass plugs and a temp sensor on the back of the head that could be used for bleeding, but unnecessary.

How to use cruise control on a Volkswagen Jetta?

So I bought a Volkswagen Jetta 2000, and no user manual came with it. I noticed that VW cruise control looks different (they're not on the steering wheel like many cars I have driven, but on a handle to the left side). If anyone know how to use it, let me know, a bit more detail will be appreciated (ie: how to set cruise on, resume, coast, accelerate)|||First off, ignore darren's stupid comment. On the left hand side stalk, slide the lever to on all the way to the far end of the stalk, to shut it off, slide it all the way in. Next, accelerate to the speed you want to cruise at. On the end of the stalk there is a button, press that button in and let off the gas. Cruise is set, and if I recall on the 2000's a light goes on indicating cruise, i.e. coast. Now, to accelerate with the cruise on you have two options. Hit the accelerator pedal and when you let off it, it will resume to your preset speed. Or, press the set button in, and it will accelerate or tap it at regular intervals. It will resume at the set speed.

How to replace key ignition switch 1991 Volkswagen Jetta?

I'm getting a 1991 Volkswagen Jetta later this week and the problem is it needs a key ignition switch. All I can find online is them without the keys. So what do I do have a locksmith come and make keys for the new one?

How much does this usually cost? Should I have the dealership do it instead? How much do you think they would charge?|||You need to get a Bentley or a Haynes as they show you the Measurements to drill the hard pins out to take the lock Cylinder out of the steering lock.

To replace the electrical switch, you will need to remove the knee pad bar, the steering wheel (if air bag equipped) you have to disconnect the battery for 20 minutes prior.

You have to be carefull about the clock spring and be sure that you mark it prior to removal.

You then can take the 2 covers off the steering shaft to see the electrical switch.

There is more like removing the turn signal stalks and such as I am more familiar to a cabby then a jetta.

If you call a lock smith they will usually charge between 100-200 bucks. If your door key is the same as the ignition, you can remove a door handle and take it to the locksmith to have the key made without a house call.|||I haven't done an A2 like yours, but I think they are like the A1s, just pull off the steering wheel, most don't even need a puller, and pull the turn signal assembly out with the three screws. Take off the plastic covers, top and bottom, and you should see the aluminum housing holding the key in it. There is an allen head bolt coming from the bottom, loosen it and the whole switch assembly should come right out. If you dont care if the key matches the door, just hit a junkyard, find one with the key in it, and throw it in yours! About a half hour job on a bad day!

What is the most common problems in Volkswagen beetle?

My Mom And Dad just Surprised Me With a New Car Well it's a Volkswagen bettle 2005 model and We have Never Owned one does anyone have any advice or know their weak points? and how long have they been known to last it has around 100,000 miles and it's diesel fuel.|||You got the best hon, they are bullet proof and has the best fuel mileage with the TDI engine. Is almost head to head with a Hybrid.

My wife had 2 Beetles an 03 and now an 07. I like the 07 and is very reliable. I wanted the 07 TDI but was too expensive. My friend had a TDI with his beetle, he ran from Wichita KS to Dallas TX and back with one tank of fuel. The 07 has Tiptronic and I drove a TDI (TurboDiesel Direct Injection) with the Tiptronic and fell in love with it. But we settle for the 5Cly 2.5 Audi engine since it was 10,000 less than the Diesel.

Diesel is pricey, but still using so little that is worth to have it. To break even with the gasoline counterparts, the fuel has to be about a Dollar difference. The TDI pulls like a V8 and is fun to drive. With the right mods, that engine is one of the preferred engine to run with Vegetable Oil (aka Biodiesel).

With proper care these cars last a very long time. Just when they break they are pricey, so do the maintenance and take good care of it. The engine oil used is Synthetic so make sure you get that. That type of oil is pricey but is so well worth it that is nothing. Here is a link with the need it oils and read the Owner's Manual it pays to know your car.

Look in he Manual for the right spec of oil and go shopping with this form, you can get some good deals out there.

When those things go wrong, they put the transmission in safe mode, where you cannot drive fast and you need to get the problem fixed. It costs an average of $300 to fix it. But it is annoying.

The engine is good and the car is very fuel efficient. It gets about the same average gas mileage as the Toyota Prius Hybrid car, but it is faster.|||With the above post, you have the best one being diesel. I have owned one for 8 years since new. It is 1.8 Litre , Turbo Engine.

What type of fuel does it take ? (Gas, Deisel?)

Thanks !|||The 1.8T is a gas engine, it requires premium fuel. The diesel engine that year was a 1.9 TDI.|||it will say on the dash underneath the fuel gauge probably diesel though|||does it say TDI or SDI in the back of the car? if so diesel

How often do i need to change the oil in my volkswagen passat?

Hi! I have a 2006 Volkswagen Passat. I had previously thought that I need to change my oil ever 3 months or 3000 miles. I read online today that I only need to change my oil every 5000 or at least once a year. Can someone clarify that for me? Thanks a million!|||Follow the manual. VW built the car they would be the expert on how to take care of it properly. They don't see any benefit to recommending a shorter interval since they don't do oil changes. But if they make them too far apart and cars start breaking down they will get a reputation for poor quality and if its under warranty it would cost them a fortune to fix them all.

Nobody except the oil change places recommend a 3k/3 month interval. Its in their best interest to convince people to do it as often as possible because thats how they make money.|||the manual says:

5,000

10,000

20,000 %26amp; every 10,000 miles thereafter

However, engines is prone to causing excessive fuel dilution (and burning oil) from the direct injection system..... when the oil is has excessive fuel dilution, the protective properties of the oil go down the drain, causing long term wear to the engine. Best to do it every 5,000 miles to be safe.

Quoting the manual again... use a oil that meets VW502.00 specification and it is good year-round|||I would suggest twice a year, with thinner oil in the winter and thicker oil in the summer.

That is mostly because of the difficulty starting in cold weather.

Since most people put on about 12,000 a year, that would be about every 6,000 miles.

However, if I had a turbo charger, I would use synthetic and then only change oil once a year.

That is because a turbo charger really needs the best possible oil, and really good oil is not effected by weather as much.|||Hi! I own and love my '06 VW GTI. It has the 2.0 liter turbocharged engine.

You did not specify which engine your Passat has, but most Passats sold have the 2.0 turbo .

My manual states to change oil every 10k.

Thats about once a year for me. I am not comfortable with this. So I change my oil and filter every 5k.

It only costs me $75 to let dealer do it for me. So I believe an extra $ 75 per year is not going to bankrupt me. Think of it as cheap insurance.

I tell myself that its mainly for the turbocharger, but even if it wasn't a turbo , I'd still do it.

I just clicked 60,000 miles on my GTI and its stronger than ever! I want to keep it that way.

Well, thats my opinion; hope it helps.

What engine does a Bay Window Volkswagen Bus use?

What type of engine could be used for a bay window volkswagen bus? Are there any engines still being manufactured that could work in it?|||why not use the stock 1700cc? it works extra well in them. especially since it takes only 4 bolts to hold it there and you dont have to do any modifications to the body or chassis|||Any pancake engine. All air cooled engines from VW is a pancake. It is the dog house shrouding for the fan on a beetle that makes that different - remove the shroud and the bare engine block is the same as the rest. However, the shrouding is necessary to keep the engine from overheating. So look for any other van first off, with all its sheet metal shrouding. That is the easiest. Then maybe a stationwagon(or Type 3) with its sheet metal work - then maybe a 411(but that will take more hammering to fit tight..

They are not manufactured anymore so you are looking for a good used one....or maybe a rebuilt one.|||What year? My '70 bay has a 1600 type 1 engine. From '68 to '72 used type 1 then they went to the pancake style.

Will working as a tech for volkswagen give me a better shot at becoming a porsche tech?

I am about to get my associates degree in automotive technology (as an auto technician) and I really want to work for Porsche. However I realize it is hard to get a job with porsche with no exotic's experience would working for Volkswagen put me on the fast track to becoming a Porsche technician?|||What your best bet is, is to find out of the VW and the Porsche dealerships in your town are owned by the same person. If they are, then start out at the VW dealership and prove your a great worker, etc.

It's what a friend of mine did here. Although he actually started out at a Ford dealership, and the owner also owned the Porsche dealership in town. He made good friends with the owner and proved he was a hard worker, and the owner sent him for training for Porsche.

He now works there, and couldn't be happier.

Although the one thing he did say, is that if you mess up or are rude to customers there, you get sent back to the Ford dealership haha...

They only want the best tech's on staff working there.

How do I replace the reverse light bulb on my 2002 Volkswagen GTI?

How do I replace the reverse light bulb on my 2002 GTI? I can get to the other bulbs. The carpet prevents me from removing the reverse bulb. I can see one nut which I assume is for removing the taillight, but not the second nut. I found a guide on the 2006 GTI taillight replacement, but it seems Volkswagen changed everything, so that will not work. If any of you have done and know where

(and what size) the second nut is, please post! Pictures would be very helpful!|||push the carpet down while wiggling the bulb holder, it will come out it just takes some wiggling and pushing.
